The Pacific's Message at COP26

Until November 12, the 195 signatory countries of the Paris Agreement are meeting at the COP26 hosted this year by the United Kingdom in Glasgow. The objective of the meeting is to assess whether the commitments made in 2015 will allow to limit the average temperature increase to 1.5°C. The members of the Pacific Islands Forum, including New Caledonia , are represented at this high-level dialogue. The contributions of the Pacific leaders are made through videos. In his speech, the President of the Government emphasized that New Caledonia has undertaken "actions to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit global warming to below 1.5°C in order to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050".

Vemööre Declaration

Louis Mapou stressed that "on behalf of New Caledonia and as a member of the Pacific Islands Forum, we call on the major industrialized nations to go beyond their mercantile ambitions to control resources and to respect their financial commitments and national contributions defined in the Paris Agreement". The Head of the New Caledonian Executive finally recalled that "the Vemööre Declaration on Biodiversity adopted in New Caledonia in 2020 by the Pacific countries  remains our roadmap in anticipation of the COP 15 on biodiversity". The 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity will be held in 2022 in China.
